The hallmark of my work over the past decade has been the application of ink-drenched rope markings to vertical and horizontal scrolls of watercolor paper, creating “rope paintings.” Collage elements provide my color palette, and contribute sculptural dimension. Rips, tears, and cuts lend counterpoint to the ink line, infusing a visual and emotional charge. Quotidien experience informs my work, often triggered by media images. The work leverages my four-decade-long passion for, and study of, Chinese landscape painting and calligraphy in Taiwan, China, and New York.

Unlike the many Western artists who stake their claim to individuality on a schism with traditional approaches, I embrace cultural intersectionality and incorporate historical antecedents, treating line and negative space with a vision rooted in Chinese painting. That my tools are atypical resources for picture making, yet universally recognizable and available, democratizes the effect of my work.
